Billy McComb and Nancy Haydn accept Whit's award from Jason Alexander
Whit Haydn received his fourth award from the Magic Castle this year at the Academy of Magical Arts Awards Banquet held at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood, CA on May 1, 2004.
This year Whit Haydn was named "Close-Up Magician of the Year" for 2003. Seinfeld co-star Jason Alexander presented the award and it was accepted by Whit's wife Nancy and Billy McComb. Billy is a famous Irish magician, and Whit's close friend and mentor.
Whit was unable to attend the banquet as he was performing in Alaska on the Diamond Princess cruise ship. Whit has previously won three other Magic Castle awards--twice for Parlour (cabaret-style magic) and once for Stage.
The magician members of the Academy of Magical Arts, who include more than 3,000 performers from all over the world, vote for the best acts of the year in each of the three categories.
The award itself is a beautiful magic wand made by master craftsman John Gaughn from rosewood, silver, and ebony, and enclosed in an antique-velvet lined case made of rare coca bola wood. Gaughn is famous for creating the big illusions used by performers such as Doug Henning and David Copperfield, and for re-creating and restoring antique magical and clockwork mechanisms from the past.
